Our Services
Cosmetic Enhancements
-
One of the best long-term solutions to restore a tooth back to its full function is a dental crown or “cap”. Made from high-grade ceramic, a crown is placed when extensive dental work such as root canal therapy, a fracturing tooth or decay that is too widespread for a filling to be used successfully.
To ensure the long-term success of your treatment, a thorough examination is conducted prior to preparation of your crown or bridge.
Dr Lother Poon is highly skilled in crown and bridge dentistry.“I am very fussy when it comes to my crown work. Every little detail counts, even though no patients will ever see their tooth once the crown has been placed over it”
“I only use the very best Australian dental lab/ceramist to construct my crowns, not cheap overseas made crowns. We have a great long term relationship with my experienced ceramists and technicians. I will never compromise my patients’ results with using cheap dental laboratories”And here at Seddon Dental, we have consistently kept prices for crowns well below Melbourne’s average.

Veneers can be either finely crafted from thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin. They are used for fixing teeth that are chipped, discoloured, crooked or have gaps.
Optimal oral health will significantly contribute to the success and longevity of your new veneers, therefore our team may prescribe a stringent oral hygiene routine, including a visit to our hygienist prior to starting your veneers.
-
These are essentially “partial crowns” for back teeth. They are ideal for larger restorations in back teeth, where full coverage crown is not viable and can usually be done with minimal destruction of your natural tooth.
As a strong believer of “minimal intervention dentistry”, Dr Lother Poon has been using bonded porcelain restorations for years with great results. This provides another (sometimes more economical) option from a full crown and still offers superior long term longevity and strength over white fillings.

Teeth whitening treatment is a safe and effective solution for giving your smile a long-lasting lift. At Seddon Dental, we offer a safe professional home whitening system so you can brighten your smile in the comfort of your own home. Before any treatment, our dentist and hygienist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and gums to ensure they are healthy.
Children’s
Dentistry
-
In addition to providing fantastic dental care for adults, we love seeing kids.
From simple things like sports mouthguards through to fixing decayed teeth, you can be sure that your child is in great hands.
-
Oral health is critical for your child’s growth and development, general health and function. Visiting the dentist at an early age is important in order to identify any problems in your child’s jaw growth as well as detecting any early signs of decay and orthodontic issues. It also helps them to develop a positive relationship with our dentists.
We recommend that your child attend regular check-up appointments every six to twelve months.
All our dentists and our hygiene therapist are excellent when dealing with young children. And Dr Lother Poon has undergone further training in orthodontic which enables him to detect early orthodontic problems.
-
After teeth have emerged you can brush them with a soft bristled baby toothbrush and water. Children’s toothpaste should not be added until they are able to spit it out. At this stage only add a small dab of kids’ fluoride toothpaste onto their soft brushes. To help prevent early childhood tooth decay, do not put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. An ongoing oral hygiene routine of brushing twice a day and regular appointments every 6-12 months with us will keep your child’s teeth in optimal health.
-
Pits and fissures are grooves in the chewing surfaces of the molar teeth. Fissure sealants are recommended for children or sometimes adults who have deep fissures in their teeth. It has been widely researched to lower the chance of tooth decay. At Seddon Dental, we are strong advocates of preventative dentistry for children. It is recommended all newly erupted adult molars (especially those with deep grooves) be sealed and protected within the first 6 months of them coming through. It’s inexpensive and painless.
-
Be aware that tooth decay is related to eating foods rich in sugar and cooked starches too often. This is especially the case for foods that are soft and sticky. If you are to give your children snacks we recommend fresh fruit, vegetables or cheese. Cavities can begin in between the teeth before you can see them, luckily most will show up on digital x-rays.
Here at Seddon Dental, we recommend a routine set of digital x-rays every 2 years for adults and teenagers with adult back teeth.
White Fillings
-
At Seddon Dental, we are amalgam & mercury free.
White fillings require less natural tooth structure to be removed compared to amalgam filings. It has improved a lot in the last decade. They are now stronger, more aesthetic, and have a stronger bond to your tooth, hence reducing the chance of recurring decays.
Root Canals
-
Most people run away when we mention these words!
Let us try to fill you in on some facts. Firstly, the aim of root canal treatment is pain relief. You may require a root canal treatment if the nerve inside your tooth has become infected or inflamed. This can be the result of decay, a fracture/crack, gum disease, trauma, or extensive dental work previously.
If the infection is not treated promptly, it can develop into an abscess. In some cases where the infection is extensive and not treated quickly, there may be no choice but extraction.
Root canal treatments are sometimes painful when the bacteria are especially virulent or the infection was not treated in time, leading to severe pain and swelling. Thus it is important to contact us at Seddon Dental as soon as your get a toothache!
Dentures
-
Dentures constitute artificial teeth that are used to replace lost or missing teeth.
Here at Seddon Dental, we offer a solution to suit your needs. Both Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures are finely crafted, custom-fitted. We have been using a fine Australian laboratory for a long time. This long term relationship with our denture technicians means your dentures will be as comfortable and look as natural as possible.
Don’t compromise on quality, even for a denture.
Dental Implants
-
One of the most reliable and long lasting tooth replacement options is the dental implant.
A dental implant usually takes between 2-6 months, to “integrate” with your jawbone, during which time a temporary crown or bridge may be placed. At completion of healing, your new crown or bridge is permanently secured onto your implant, restoring your smile and function.
Here at Seddon Dental, Dr Lother Poon has a keen interest in dental implants and has undergone further training to be up to date with new implant systems. We liaise closely with an oral surgeon or a periodontist (gum-specialist) as we believe they are the best practitioners qualified to do the delicate implant surgery.
Hygiene Treatments
-
Our Hygiene Therapist , Bei Bei, is specially trained to take care of patient’s oral hygiene. She has become an invaluable member of our team and more importantly, our patients love her gentle touch!
Her job involves scaling and polishing of your teeth, teaching you how to practice good oral hygiene at home, and providing other preventive dental care such as fluoride, fissure sealants, digital x-rays etc. Our hygienist will also perform root-planning for those with active gum disease.
-
It is estimated that over 80% of people will experience varying degrees of gum disease at some point in their lives. Gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss in adults, however when diagnosed early the condition can be reversed.
Gum disease results from the accumulation of plaque at and below the gum-line. When plaque is not removed effectively, it hardens into calculus, or tartar. Calculus cannot be removed by brushing and flossing.
As gum disease develops, your gums become red and swollen which bleeds easily, this is the first sign of gingivitis. You or your partner may also notice bad breath.
One of the biggest concerns with developing gum disease is that it can go unnoticed for many years until it becomes a severe problem. Only through regular check-up appointments can we diagnose gum disease in its early stage and treat it before permanent damage.
A procedure called root planning and scaling is performed using specially developed instruments to remove calculus from your teeth and below your gums.
There is also evidence to support a strong correlation between gum disease and other health issues including an increased risk of heart disease, type II diabetes, stroke and low birth-weight babies.
We recommend a hygiene visit every 6 months.
-
Almost all people brush their teeth. But are you doing it correctly?
Has anyone taught you the most effective way of spending those 2 minutes in front of the mirror?
The importance of an effective oral hygiene routine cannot be over-emphasised. Brushing twice a day properly with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day, in conjunction with 6 monthly professional cleaning by us will keep your teeth and gums healthy.
At Seddon Dental we provide personalised advice on cleaning and flossing techniques in order to help you clean your teeth better.
-
Teeth staining and bad breath are the least of your worries when it comes to smoking.
In addition to causing lung cancer, heart disease and a myriad of other health conditions, smoking is one of the main contributors to gum disease, causing bleeding when you brush and exacerbation of periodontitis, degenerative disease of the gum and bone.
Heavy smokers are usually less suitable for dental procedures such as dental implants, as smoking will impede the recovery of the gum tissue and gum disease causes a reduction in jawbone density.

Firstly, congratulations! It’s an exciting time of your life, and it is also a time when your health is paramount. Although you may not be aware of any noticeable changes, your teeth and gums are too affected by your pregnancy.
It is estimated that approximately 50% of pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis. This can cause gum swelling, increased bleeding during brushing/flossing, redness or tenderness of the gum tissue.
Ongoing research studies have demonstrated a correlation between periodontal disease and low birth-weight babies.
Early periodontal disease is a very treatable and reversible condition. If you have periodontal disease during pregnancy the team at Seddon Dental may recommend a common non-surgical procedure known as scaling and root planning. Our hygienist’s gentle approach makes this somewhat “scary” procedure a breeze.

Our surgery and your first visit
Both of our practices have bright vibrant décors. From the moment you walk into Seddon Dental, it doesn’t feel like a cold and sterile dental surgery, but a warm and inviting place you can relax.
During your first visit, you will be welcomed by one of our friendly staffs and our dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and answer any questions. This may involve taking digital x-rays so that we can tailor a treatment program that best suits you.
A visit to our hygienist Jillian or Bei Bei may also take place during which thorough periodontal (or gum) records are taken and assessed, and a personalised home care regime is designed for you. We continually invest in new technology so that you can be assured of quality diagnosis and treatment.
We utilise low-radiation digital x-rays, wireless intra-oral cameras and computerised patient records. Seddon Dental has the latest Class “B” autoclaves in our dedicated sterilisation room so patients can be assured in the knowledge that the highest levels of infection control policies are always in practice. Our amalgam waste management means we don’t pollute our waters from the removal of old metal fillings.
For patients comfort our in-chair entertainment has a large LCD TV with Foxtel so that our patients (especially kids) can relax with watching their favourite cooking, sport or cartoon shows. Click here to see what our patients say about us.
